Facing the pain of saying goodbye

Would you like it if you were with someone you love, and when you were not looking they sneaked away without saying goodbye? Leaving a distressed child can be a very painful experience, and it may be tempting to sneak away. However, what a child may learn from this experience is that it is not safe to move away from the loved one. Such experiences can interfere with feelings of security.
